Architectural drawing – Leo Modrčin

Architectural drawing: a performance and an installation

The architect Leo Modrčin makes drawings and exhibits a series of animated spatial studies. Drawing is performed in the time span of a 8 hr-work day on the day of the event. The content of the drawings is a personal and spatial interpretation of the two-dimensional diagram by Stephen Hawking, depicting the birth of the universe. The drawing will be executed on the walls of the exhibition space chosen by the curators, depending on the available quality of the wall surfaces. The installation consists of projections of the three-dimensional animated drawings, i.e. architectural studies, contemporary arhitectons—on the screens of available devices. The visitors are kindly requested to bring their personal computing and communication devices with screens, so that they could be supplied with the works for the exhibition. At the end of the installation, the participants will be given the works to take along. With this project the author explores a. the contemporary methods for production of architectural space, b. the relationships between the contemporary architectural and art practices, c. the meaning of it all, as follows:

a) the spatial studies are made by using the most simple 3-D software package, as this is the only contemporary tool available to the architect that he can fully master and work without relying on a team of the specialized experts and most advanced hyper-realistic animation and graphic design tools. By using computers with these most advanced programs one can render architecture that is a complete simulation of reality, so much so that it does not even need to be built.

b ) many contemporary artists work with methods that are closer to the methods of the standard architectural practice, such as working in the scale of buildings, whole cities, public space. They also work with teams of consultants and collaborators, use the project management methods and business models. On the other hand, many innovative architects model their practice on the independent artistic research based on the conceptual interpretation of the tools of production and other phenomena from their immediate environment. Is the Bauhaus idea of synthesis of art and architecture transformed into a struggle for territory, or…?

c) the simple cosmological diagram is mirrored and rotated to form a torus. This spatial archetype could possibly represent the universe: it starts from a singular point of the big bang, it expands to a maximum volume in time only to have the entire space shrunk again to nothing. This being a site specific performance at the Golo brdo compound, a certain fact becomes obvious: regardless of the means and methods of production, all the political, ideological, social, even divine sources, we are left only with artifacts. For architects, that is built or drawn space. It does not really matter.

At the end of the one day event, the drawings on the wall will be white-washed, as not to become icons. The animated spatial drawings of space are only the colorful light anyway.
